Он считается представителем Дюссельдорфской школы девятнадцатого века, соучредителем которой он был. Под влиянием Вильгельма фон Шадова, за которым он последовал в Дюссельдорф в 1826 году, он посвятил себя написанию крупных исторических картин. Лессинг изучал архитектуру у влиятельного немецкого архитектора Карла Фридриха Шинкеля в Берлине с 1822 по 1826 год.
