Turmeric for Inflammation: How Much is Enough?

Turmeric, a relative of turmeric, is a tropical herb native to southern South america that produces a dazzling orange root. It's a main ingredient in curry spice blends, and the Japanes also brew turmeric root as a tea. Nutrition research has uncovered numerous health great things about this versatile spice and some supplement companies offer turmeric in capsule form.

Anti-inflammatory

Ayurvedic and Chinese herbalists recommend turmeric for it is anti-inflammatory properties. A research laboratory animal study published in the August 2012 concern of the journal "Inflammation" found that curcumin, the active constituent of turmeric, protected kidneys from toxin-induced damage. Curcumin supplementation led pre lit to decreased amounts of swelling and prevented white bloodstream cells from migrating into the kidneys, processes that indicate a heightened resistant response. The study used doses of 5 mg per kilogram of body weight for three days and nights.

Anticancer

The way NSAIDs work is by inhibiting pain producing enzymes called COX 1 and COX 2. If you inhibit those enzymes then you reduce pain.

But COX 1 is also responsible for protection of the lining of your stomach.

And that’s the reason why NSAID’s have a warning on the label that says consuming them can cause ulcers, stomach bleeding, and other GI issues.

Turmeric on the other hand is a selective COX 2 inhibitor which means it will not affect COX 1, so it can reduce pain inflammation without the gastrointestinal side effects.
