The Runes of Northern Europe strike us as both monumental and mysterious and have developed various mystical and magical practices around them. But, what are the origins of modern runic occultism? Johannes Bureus (d. 1652) was both among the founders of the academic study of Runes but also the founder of Esoteric Runology. Following the philosophy of Gothicism, Bureus would argue that the Runes held ancient mystical secrets preserved from the confusion at the Tower of Babel and encoded in "Runic Kabbalah." He detailed this Esoteric Runology in his Adulruna Rediviva or The Rebirth of the Noble Runes, a work still unpublished to this day.

As we investigate the origins of the runes and their application in magical rituals, we will delve into the intriguing world of Scandinavian mythology. Speaking words had a strong creative potential, according to the pre-Christian Germanic worldview. Hence, the runes are potent magical tools that have the capacity to create reality and are graphic representations of phonemes. Nevertheless, they can be dangerous in the wrong hands.
We also discover more about Odin, the supreme god who personifies the insatiable thirst for knowledge. In Norse mythology, Odin was the wisest person and the first to fully understand the meaning of the runic alphabet. He made the greatest sacrifice to acquire this knowledge and then passed it on to humanity.

I've been on a bit of a research journey and found runes! These are a spiritual tool similar to tarot cards and I was hooked! Then I found that people actually make these, so I thought I'd give it a go! There are several rune alphabets, I used the elder futhark alphabet.

Baking Polymer Clay:

UK instructions for baking- it's all in Celsius not Fahrenheit, which is why I don't always quote times & temperatures. I recommend using Polymer Clay packet instructions. However, a good tip is to bake no higher than 100 degrees Celsius. It's better to bake at a lower temperature for longer, than higher for shorter.

Larger clay items need longer- always check after 10 mins- sometimes things fall over in the oven & can be rescued at this point. Watch for burning! Especially white as it's quick to burn (don't know why...) and can turn yellow!

Electric ovens work better as the temperature is even, gas oven temperatures fluctuate do not keep a steady temp for baking polymer clay.

In this video, we will discuss the meaning of all 24+1 runes of the Elder Futhark. You will see keywords and meaning for all runes as well as a brief introduction of the runes.

I also provide a trick I use to remember the meaning of the runes by associating each to an image that represents it's concept.

These are meant as a guideline to help you understand each, but by no means, is the sole interpretation of them. As you learn how to read each rune, you will develop your own connection with what you feel is the best representation of them and evolve into your own personal style reading them.

The runes used in this video were made by me.

The Elder Futhark (or Fuþark), also known as the Older Futhark, Old Futhark, or Germanic Futhark, is the oldest form of the runic alphabets. It was a writing system used by Germanic peoples for Northwest Germanic dialects in the Migration Period. Inscriptions are found on artifacts including jewelry, amulets, plateware, tools, and weapons, as well as runestones in Scandinavia, from the 2nd to the 10th centuries. The Younger Futhark, also called Scandinavian runes, is a runic alphabet and a reduced form of the Elder Futhark, with only 16 characters, in use from about the 9th century, after a "transitional period" during the 7th and 8th centuries. The reduction, somewhat paradoxically, happened at the same time as phonetic changes that led to a greater number of different phonemes in the spoken language, when Proto-Norse evolved into Old Norse. Also, the writing custom avoided carving the same rune consecutively for the same sound, so the spoken distinction between long and short vowels was lost in writing. Thus, the language included distinct sounds and minimal pairs that were written the same. Anglo-Saxon runes (Old English: rūna ᚱᚢᚾᚪ) are runes used by the early Anglo-Saxons as an alphabet in their writing system. The characters are known collectively as the futhorc (ᚠᚢᚦᚩᚱᚳ fuþorc) from the Old English sound values of the first six runes. The futhorc was a development from the 24-character Elder Futhark. Since the futhorc runes are thought to have first been used in Frisia before the Anglo-Saxon settlement of Britain, they have also been called Anglo-Frisian runes. They were likely to have been used from the 5th century onward, recording Old English and Old Frisian.

In the modern world, 'Runes' are perceived as superstitious symbols which enable those that have read into their powers to engage in witchcraft. This perspective of runes is comparatively new - though runes have always been shrouded in mystery, and have to some extent used for magic, medieval runes are a lot more utilitarian. They are used for their riddle-like properties, but they are also used to simply write notes. Their use in magical formulae is not because they were unique, but because they were the only script which people had at the time.

This video goes over the history of runes - from what we know of their creation, to their change in shape, to their eventual decline in use. Then, it discusses briefly their use in the modern world - by necessity, as a lot of our modern perspective of runes is based in events of only the past 100-150 years.

With their navigational skills and advanced longships, the Vikings sustained their seafaring for over 300 years. But for all their might, they left few monuments. Instead, fragments of stone, bark and bone found in the sites of ancient settlements provide the keys to their culture. Many of these objects are inscribed with Old Norse written in runic letters. Jesse Byock explores the ancient language.
