The Sun (Sun symbol.svg) is the ruling planet of Leo and is exalted in Aries. In classical Greek mythology, the Sun was represented by the Titans Hyperion and Helios (Roman Sol, and later by Apollo, the god of light). The Sun is the star at the center of our solar system, around which the Earth and other planets revolve and provides us with heat and light. The arc that the Sun travels in every year, rising and setting in a slightly different place each day, is therefore in reality a reflection of the Earth’s own orbit around the Sun. This arc is larger the farther north or south from the equator latitude, giving a more extreme difference between day and night and between seasons during the year. The Sun travels through the twelve signs of the zodiac on its annual journey, spending about a month in each. The Sun’s position on a person’s birthday therefore determines what is usually called his or her “sun” sign. However, the sun sign allotment varies between Western (sign change around 22-23 of every month) and Hindu astrology (sign change around 14-15 of every month) due the different systems of planetary calculations, following the tropicaland sidereal definitions respectively.
The Sun, the star at the center of the Solar System
Astrologically speaking, the Sun is usually thought to represent the conscious ego, the self and its expression, personal power, pride and authority, leadership qualities and the principles of creativity, spontaneity, health and vitality, the sum of which is named the “life force”. One of the first recorded references to Sun worship is from the Mesopotamian Religion and described in the Epic of Gilgamesh. The 1st-century poet Marcus Manilius in his epic, 8000-verse poem, Astronomica, described the Sun, or Sol, as benign and favorable. In medicine, the Sun is associated with the heart, circulatory system,[20] and the thymus. Additionally, humans depend on the sun to produce and obtain vitamin D; an important supplement aiding the body’s immune system and bone health. In Ayurveda, it rules over life-force (praan-shakti), governs bile temperament (pitta), stomach, bones and eyes. In modern astrology, the Sun is the primary native ruler of the fifth house, but traditionally it had its joy in the ninth house. The Sun is associated with Sunday. Dante Alighieri associated the Sun with the liberal art of music. In Chinese astrology, the Sun represents Yang, the active, assertive masculine life principle.
Father, boss, actor, husband, life, day, light, health, willpower, stomach, center, confidence Day: Sunday Colors: Gold, Orange The Sun is a ruler of Leo and a truly special entity as the only star with close proximity to our home planet. It gives us life and as such – makes all things in our chart possible. The Sun can do more than any other celestial body. It hides processes of incredible importance, creating energy to shine on us and everything around it in an incredibly large radius. Its role in our chart is to power our batteries for a lifetime and remind us what we are capable of, how our personality’s core will manifest and shine a light on everyone around us. Its warmth can burn just like it can breathe in life, and to analyze its position we always need to carefully assess the feminine energies in the horoscope to follow. If the Sun is extremely strong and the Moon weak, we will see that initiative burns feelings, and recognize a person on a chase for goals with no regard to their limits, emotional needs or even other people. On the other hand the weakness of the Sun speaks of general lack of energy, creativity, and consequentially – life itself.

“Planet” Sun

The Sun is the star in charge of our little Solar system with all of its movement, planets, satellites and asteroids. It takes up to 99% of the mass of the entire system, and although Jupiter is enormous compared to the rest of the planets, it still cannot be compared to the magnitude of the Sun. From our perspective, the main role of this burning star is to provide life on our planet, but we often simply recognize movement in relation to it and see it as a point that everything circles around. Whatever our perspective, we have to understand that its symbolism in Astrology is closely related to its part in the cosmic sense, and its position in a sign, house, and aspects defines the point we tend to turn our lives around, giving us energy, warmth, creativity and life.

Sun in Astrology

Many Astrologers unfairly diminish the importance of the Sun in one’s chart. To forget its incredible role in the greater scheme of things is simply a pity, and no matter if we have our little geocentric system to rely on, it is still the center of the entire obvious cosmic system we belong to. As such, it is a lonely point of success and something that pulls us with strong gravity, which is why so many interpretations are based on our Sun sign instead of our Ascendant or the position of the Moon. If you want to understand the Sun fully, we have to realize that it is in no way similar to anything else we projected on the zodiacal circle. In fact it is the only point that all others would fall into, if there wasn’t fast movement to keep us all in balance where we are. Our personality, our core and energetic center are all controlled with the Sun. It represents our third chakra, the solar plexus, giving us strength of will, personality, life, immunity, and the metabolism we have. To become a leader, a central figure, reach any high position, or aim for fame and recognition, our Sun needs to be strong. In charts of people who end up on a big screen, we will see that the Sun carries an invisible force felt through their charisma and the energy they share with the world. As if their confidence is bigger than the fact that anyone’s watching, these special souls seem to be pulled into this life only to shine a light on the rest of us, without even knowing. Giving importance to the Sun doesn’t mean we should take away the importance of other entities in our chart, but the truth is – it is the only point that leads all others to circle around it. The center it stands for needs to be found on a personal and mundane level, so that consciousness, acceptance and Unity can become our regular routine. Giving us a strong sense of what we were born to be, the Sun is the brightest point in our charts, and this should never be neglected or forgotten, however deep we go or however dark we tend to get.

Manifestations

Since the Sun speaks of light shining on our world, its role is rational, obvious, and aware. Manifestations of the Sun are always clear and in the open, and this makes it truly hard to connect it to the symbolism of Pisces, Neptune, and the twelfth house. It stands for our creativity, our heart and our inner child. In its most prominent form, it will represent fame, our honest expression, and our perfect eyesight. Along with its aspects and dignity, the Sun represents our ability to metabolize things that come to us in this lifetime, being responsible for feeling “sick to our stomach” when certain situations become too tough to handle. When this feeling occurs, we can be sure that something doesn’t relate well with our personality, and while we might stay to test the future of such occurrence, it might be better to listen to this inner voice and move away from the source of our insecurity and inability to face the world. As the fire that helps us metabolize any toxin we take in, the Sun protects us from all harm coming into our system from the outer world when our boundaries aren’t clearly set, and is susceptible to all sorts of energetic vampires when weak or senselessly giving. The worst thing we can do for our Sun is compromise, as if dismissing the possibility to create a central point of agreement where Unity can be reached satisfying all of the parties involved. Looking at the Sun we see our father, the image of our Self, our boss, all superiors and our ego that builds up as a consequence of authorities we have had in life. It is our confidence in all its glory and represents our true creativity and initiative to breathe life into things, as an infinite source of energy we cannot spend or destroy for millions of years.

About The Sun

4.5 billion years ago, a solar nebula collapsed and our very own Sun was born. Over time, this particular star became the host of its very own solar system. Today, the Sun continues to ensure that the 8 planets and various other cosmic bodies we call our neighbors have a (relatively) stable, safe place to call home in the wild vastness of the Universe.

Besides being the force that keeps the solar system aligned and organized, the Sun is able to hold himself together as a mass of fire and burning gases because of his own gravity. It follows that, in astrology, the Sun represents the life force that holds the Self and all its different parts together. Physiologically speaking, the Sun rules over the cardiovascular system, which includes the heart.

Your core identity and role in life are expressed through the Sun’s placement in your birth chart. Astrologers often refer to the Sun as one of two “luminaries” (the other being the Moon). The Sun essentially determines your personality traits, “shining” on certain parts of you and illuminating them for the world to see. Those certain parts are decided by the zodiac sign the Sun was in at the moment you were born.

Our core personality traits are represented by our “Sun” or, as astrologers say, our “Sun sign.”  This is also called our zodiac sign, or birth sign, and is determined by where the Sun was located when we were born. If the Sun is in the Aries constellation at the time of one’s birth, then they likely have Aries traits at the centre of their being. Think of how everything in our solar system revolves around the Sun; in the same way, we as individuals have a centre, a core that defines our unique essence.

Our vitality and resilience in life are ruled by the Sun, motivating the actions we as individuals take in our “search for a unique identity,” as astrologer Judy Hall explains. The Sun determines the nature of a person’s self-expression and creativity.

An Air Sun sign’s creativity manifests intellectually while a Fire Sun sign’s creativity happens in physical and social ways.

A Water Sun sign is more likely to be fluid in their self-expression than a stability-craving Earth Sun sign.

That is the role the Sun plays in our natal charts. Every day, the Sun occurs in a specific transit depending on where the Earth and the other planets are in the solar system. Thus, the Sun “shines” in a certain way on certain planets, and that looks a little bit different every day. If the Sun is sextile Jupiter, for example, that would mean the Sun is shining on Jupiter’s optimism and luck on that specific day. Similarly, your Sun sign represents the Sun illuminating your best traits.

Scientists have determined that, at 4.5 billion years old, the Sun is likely in its middle-ages. They estimate that the Sun has about 6.5 billion years left before he runs out of hydrogen (his primary element), swells up, and consumes Mercury, Venus, and probably Earth, too. The Sun will then shrink down into a white dwarf star and what remains of the solar system will be released from their orbits to drift away into space.

The Sun, the giver of life, represents our conscious mind in Astrology. It represents our will to live and our creative life force. Just as the planets revolve around the Sun in our solar system, we derive our life purpose from the Sun in our natal charts. The Sun is our ego. It is also our “adult”– the part of us that censors our “inner child”, that reasons things out, and makes final decisions. The Sun is our basic identity, and represents self-realization.  When you are asked, “Who are you?”, and you’ve passed your basic statistics and occupation, your answers will be a description of your Sun. The Sun also represents our overall vitality. The Sun directs us, and can be considered “the boss” of our chart. The Sun () is so important in the chart, that the happiest people on this earth are those who identify (without over-identifying) with the Sun’s expression. Though one might think that the traits of their Sun would come easy to them, the truth is, the Sun shows what we are learning to be. It is very important to remember that the Sun represents reason as opposed to instinct. Sun Symbol GlyphWith respect to the other luminary (the Moon), the Sun reflects the present or the “here and now”, while the Moon infuses the past into our lives through the feelings. Grant Lewi referred to the Sun as indicative of “the psychological bias which will dominate your actions”. He went on to say, “You may think, dream, imagine, hope to be a thousand things, according to your Moon and your other planets: but the Sun is what you are, and to be your best self in terms of your Sun is to cause your energies to work along the path in which they will have maximum help from planetary vibrations.” (1) When we are “acting out” our Sun, we are purposeful, directed, proud, and creative. On the negative side, we can be haughty, overly willful, self-centered, and judgmental. In the chart, the position of the Sun by zodiac sign represents the native’s life purpose and the style in which they leave their mark in the world. By house, the Sun’s position shows where our personalities shine. The areas of life associated with that house reveal the types of experiences which contribute to our sense of individuality and which shape our sense of pride. These areas of life are ones in which we seek to express and focus our Sun sign qualities.
The Sun is the most powerful body in Astrology’s sky. It influences the way we express ourselves, our overall energies, and our broad personalities. While you have many signs — every planet in our solar system was in one of the 12 zodiac signs when you were born — your Sun sign is what’s generally referred to as your zodiac sign. Hey, baby, what’s your sign? In Astronomy, the Sun is the center of our solar system, and all the planets orbit around it. Astrology, however, is Earth-centric, meaning it’s based on our perspective of the planets, and their relationship to each other from here on Earth. So, when the Sun shifts from one zodiac sign to the next, it’s not the Sun that is physically moving, but our viewpoint of it — and therefore, our connection to and relationship with its energies from Earth.

The Sun’s Lessons

This content was written by tarot.com writer Jeff Jawer. The gifts of the Sun are open hearts, generous spirits, creative impulses, playfulness, and love. It is the astrological symbol of life and identity, the luminous self, inside the web of relationships, and ideas and activities that occupy much of our lives. You can get deep psychological insight about how the Sun and other planets shape who you are with a personalized birth chart. The Sun is life itself, and as such, is not frozen in the past of personal history or limited in the shell of one’s ego. While we usually identify with its qualities according to the sign it was in when we were born, it is really about being fully conscious in the present, and also creative about the future. The Sun is more connected with who we are becoming than where we have been. Play is a good way to tap into the power of the Sun. Innocent enjoyment without ambition or goal reconnects us to our inner child. It’s a way to live in the present rather than getting lost in the hopes we have for tomorrow, or regrets from the past. The freedom to enjoy ourselves opens the heart and activates the creative force of the Sun. It also makes it easier to give and receive love. The fiery Sun is also about taking risks by expressing ourselves with less concern regarding the consequences. This is not, however, an excuse to criticize other people because the key to solar consciousness is to stay connected with yourself. The power to transform your life is not in the hands of others, but instead lies within your own body, mind, and spirit. When we extend ourselves into the world with play, art, imagination, and physical activity, the Sun shines brightly in our hearts. The Sun represents courage, which comes from the Latin root for heart. Being courageous, though, is not the absence of fear, but rather the willingness to take action in spite of it. Practicing bravery on a small scale trains us to be strong when facing difficult circumstances. The heart is a muscle, and it can be strengthened by staying alert and being truthful when we’d prefer to quit or hide. Self-confidence is a quality associated with the Sun, but one that is often misunderstood. There are powerful-looking individuals who appear to be strong, yet they lack compassion for others. This is not true confidence that flows from the heart — it is aggression mixed with competence that masks underlying insecurities. When we connect to the Sun, there is no need to be a bully or to greedily hog the spotlight. Solar strength is patient and generous, it is creative and filled with the joy that comes from truly loving ourselves. It is not in the doing that we find the Sun; it is in being. The simple process of paying full attention to the present releases waves of energy for us to use as we choose. We connect to the Sun with play, risk-taking, creativity, generosity, and love that warms our hearts and fills our lives with light.
The Sun takes approximately 365 days to travel through the Zodiac, and spends 30 days in each sign. (There are 30 degrees in a sign). The Sun’s daily motion is roughly of one degree. In astrology, as viewed from the Earth, neither the Sun nor the Moon retrogrades. The luminaries, i.e. the Sun and the Moon, are the only “planets” which never move backwards on the Zodiac as they perform their endless dance. Distance from Earth: 150 millions km. Mass: 334 000 times the Earth’s. Fire is his element. His nature is hot and dry. He rules Leo and is in exaltation in Aries. He is in analogy with the heart. He represents the father, the husband, and the leader. The age of the Sun covers the period from 20 to 40 years, approximately. Temperament: choleric. Characterology: emotive, secondary, active. He is passionate. The Sun is the individual’s ego, his aspirations, his inner self and his will, that which he tends to really be, unlike the Ascendant which is the image projected onto others. The Sun is the masculine part of the personality, the Yang, and as such, he represents all male figures (father, husband, leader, etc.). He provides clues to the image of the father and men in general, as well as the type of relationship with them, regardless of the gender of the chart’s owner. However, he seems to be more important in men’s chart, since he stands for all masculine and positive values. The Sun is a star of warmth, life, and light. Therefore, he emphasizes courage, loyalty, nobleness and generosity, but also pride, irascibility, and self-centredness. In a woman’s chart, the Sun usually symbolizes her father, and later on, her husband. The Sun is always active in the woman’s personality and represents her ideal of man. The Sun is associated with youth, the period in life when, brimming with ambitions and hopes, one completes one’s studies. Great ball of fire! The bold, bright Sun is at the center of our solar system and depicts the forecast for your horoscope. According to astrology, the Sun is the essence of your personality.

Astrologers believe that Sol (the name of the corresponding Roman sun god) is what makes us tick. The Sun’s heat and energy radiates outward, warming all the planets. Without the Sun as a planetary ruler, there would be no life for us Earthlings. Symbolically, astrologers view the Sun quite the same way: It’s position is central to your personality. The Sun changes zodiac signs approximately every thirty days, so people born in these clusters will share a Sun sign and many basic personality traits. For example, those born between November 21 and December 21 will have a Sagittarius Sun. (Note: The beginning and ending day of each solar cycle will vary based on your year of birth.) Those born “on the cusp” should run a birth chart to find their actual Sun sign, which changes at a precise minute each year. Do your chart for free here.
What is the special light that you shine into the world? How can you be most radiant?
Each celestial body is said to “rule” a particular sign. The Sun is the ruling planet of proud, theatrical Leo. Therefore, if you have a Leo Sun sign, you can count the great ball of fire as your planetary beacon of light. But no matter what your Sun sign is, its position in your natal chart can definitely make for one dramatic flair! The Sun’s surface—called the photosphere—puts on quite the show with its dark sunspots (Scorpio, is that you?), solar flares (oh hi, Gemini) and coronal mass injections (whoa, Aries, whoa). Solar energy radiates outward: think of sunbeams flooding the daytime sky. How you express yourself outwardly is greatly revealed through your Sun sign. What is the special light that you shine into the world? How can you be most radiant? A Libra Sun may be most luminous when creating beauty while a Capricorn Sun may build structures that provide order for the world. Understanding your Sun sign reveals so much. And while all the planets shape our character, the Sun can be thought of as the Self; the “me” that you show to the world. El Sol can influence everything from wardrobe to social style, and even career path.
The ego is also the Sun’s domain. When imbalanced, those beams can produce arrogance, swagger or a mask of false confidence.
Since the Sun is our energy source, your Sun sign can reveal places to draw your strength, confidence and creative expression from. What kind of fuel do you burn? With a future-forward Aquarius Sun you get revitalized by new and unconventional ideas; a sentimental Cancer Sun may recharge by spending time with inner circle friends or alone at home. The Sun also governs our pride. This heavenly body inspires humans to produce great, historical works; to garner applause and earn our bragging rights. But the ego is also the Sun’s domain. When imbalanced, those beams can produce arrogance, swagger or a mask of false confidence. That’s why it’s so helpful to learn about the other planets in your chart. The Sun reveals our core instincts, but doesn’t say much about our hidden desires or soul urges. (Look to the moon, Neptune and Pluto for more on those). qq
In astrology, the Sun is associated with the father and masculine figures. How well do you relate to your dad or the men in your life?
Historically, Native Americans have prayed to “Father Sky,” pointing heavenward. In astrology, the Sun is associated with the father and masculine figures. How well do you relate to your dad or the men in your life? Your Sun sign is quite telling in this regard, too. For example: An independent Sagittarius Sun could have a fiery relationship to their dad, but also one based around sharing wisdom and higher truths. Or, a Pisces Sun can become overly dependent (even codependent) to dad—or, conversely, feel like a victim of a father’s distance, addictions or struggles. It’s interesting to note that the receptive, intuitive moon is the counterpart to the Sun and governs the relationship to the mother and female figures. Understanding your Sun sign is key to navigating your self-expression. While you can’t change the sign you were born under, you can adjust the dials to help strengthen the positive traits. Every Sun sign has challenging aspects: these can be turned into strengths by gaining awareness of them—not trying to make them go away. For example, a Scorpio Sun may be afflicted with jealousy, but can also use that twinge of envy as a compass to desire instead of a tool for destructive competition. It’s all in the way you use it. Sun (Surya)
The Sun – the life giver, the beacon of light…
The Sun is the life giver, as it is the light giver. Astrology and Vedic Astrology lay supreme emphasis on the Sun, wherein it is considered as one of the major planets, responsible for giving shape, personality and future to a life or an event. The planet of Sun is also known as a luminary and a star in Astrology, and is said to represent the self, an individual’s personality and ego, the spirit and the special, unique characteristics, which make an individual one of his kind in the universe. The Sun is known to create one’s identity and face. As per the Vedic Astrology, the Sun also signifies ones creative ability and the power to meet the everyday challenges that life brings forth. The Sun is considered as a fast moving planet and a personal planet, when reading the movements of the planets and the Horoscopes. It is called as a fast moving planet as it takes lesser time to cover the Zodiacal circle. The Sun takes approximately 30 days to complete its stay in each Zodiac Sign. The Sun and its placement in one’s Horoscope (as well as the Moon) is an effective tool, used by the Astrologers since ages, to read and understand an individual’s psychology and personality – the strengths, the weaknesses etc. One’s natural father, husband, authority figures and other major male influences are also said to be ruled by the Sun. Also, a person’s birth children are signified by the Sun. The Sun’s energy is considered forceful and potent. And, it blesses a person with qualities like authority, the ability to lead and creative essence. Naturally, the Sun also signifies a person’s inner essence, their core being. Through the will of this planet, we can learn to manifest ourselves in the world. The Sun is majestic, and in keeping with its regal air, it rules royalty and higher office. This orb also lords over our health and well-being. The Sun’s golden glow is a vital life force which imbues us with strength, energy and a will to succeed. It is the Sun that gives strength to the other planets, which is why this planet occupies a key role in astrology. Energy Type – Masculine Time Spent in each Sign – 30 Days approximately (a month) Element – Fire Nature – Hot and dry; passionate and fiery Ruler of the Sign – Leo Ruler of the House – Fifth Imparts – Health, warmth, life, ability to deal with challenges, authority, attractiveness, ambitions

The sun in astrology speaks to your self image, your core, a part of you that is constant – it represents the quiet, unfaltering, profound and enduring power that comes from within. Your sun sign empowers you to apply determination, make choices and direct the various aspects of your life. The sun in astrology speaks to your will, and its zodiac sign decides how the will is articulated, which can be helped or hindered through the movement of the other planets in your natal chart. While we hear a lot about sun signs in astrology, the sun sign is only the beginning of your personality. Your sun sign outlines your basic character, your center.

The Central Planet

The keyword for the sun is “integrate“. Integrate means to make whole, or to bring together. When we rule, we bring together the people under one authority (us). When we create, we bring together different things into a new whole. This implies that we express ourselves in some way (reveal to the world). And when we vitalise, we make strong and healthy (whole). These all add up to making an impression. The sun is closely related to the heart or centre of things. This leads us to the “royal” aspect of the sun. The sun represents, therefore, power. The sun is also related to vitality, and therefore health. All of these meanings can be traced back to the keyword “integrate”. The position of the sun in a chart shows how the person integrates themselves and consequently their world. The Sun indicates what we ought to do to attain our life-purpose. The sun rules Leo. The sun is also associated with the “Will”. When we have integrated the supportive and disruptive elements of our personality, then we have a strong “Will”.

The Sun

The Sun is often considered the most important of all the astrological planets. In fact, it is the only planet used for interpretations in the popular horoscopes found in newspapers and magazines. This “sun-sign” astrology describes a person based on the position of the sun relative to its yearly orbit at the time of a person’s birth. When someone asks “what’s your sign” they are referring to the one of the 12 signs of the astrological zodiac (Aries, Taurus, Libra, Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius and Pisces). (As noted before, these astrological signs are not the same as the constellations which bear their name. Over time, the precession of the equinox meant that the sun’s position has changed relative to the fixed stars in the actual astronomical constellations.) In an interpretation, the Sun represents the conscious mind, vitality, the will, power, and self. It is said to represent dominant personality traits (although for many the moon is more important in determining the ebb and flow of personality). In horary or mundane astrology, the Sun rules gold, power, honor, rulers and leaders. In medical astrology, the Sun represents the heart, spine, and the person’s general vitality. The position of the Sun in a natal chart could be said to be where the individual wants to “shine.”

The Story of the Sun

The palace of the Sun was a radiant place, gleaming with gold and ivory and jewels.  Well, actually, there were two of them — one in the east and one in the west.  Each day, as soon as Eos, goddess of the dawn, opened the palace gates, Helios would burst forth in his dazzling chariot to ride across the sky.

His radiance lit up everything around him. It took all of his great strength to control the four wild and fiery horses that carried him up the steep and narrow path to the top of the sky, but he kept them under control. At high noon, they would rest a bit and look around, seeing everything.  Then they would continue on their way and the shadows would eventually grow long and dusk would be upon them as they arrived at the western palace. After a rest, Helios and his horses would set off by sea to the eastern palace, and get ready to make the trip all over again.

Helios was such an important god that the people of Rhodes built a gigantic statue in his honor to guard their harbor.    Although nothing remains of it today, it is still known as the Seventh Wonder of the World. Apollo is sometimes referred to as the same god as Helios, but they were actually two different gods.  Apollo was the son of Zeus and the twin sister of Artemis.  He was the god of light and music.

The Sun in Astrology

The Sun is, by far, the most important planet in your chart.  It represents your awareness of the fact that you exist and your consciousness of who you are.  It is, in fact, the center of
Kelly Slater's 51st win at the Quicksilver Pro France
your universe.  Like the Sun in the sky, everything else revolves around this center.  Its traits are held deep within your psyche.  You look out at the world from it.  You know what you know because of it.  The Sun is your ego is therefore the most personal of all the Personal Planets. Its placement in your chart shows where you want to shine…to make a name for yourself.  It’s that “look Ma, no hands” urge we all have, however large or small.  It is  the need we have to step out and say “look at me – and tell me I’m great!”
Without the Sun, there is no light and life as we know it on Earth would not exist.
The Sun
It lets us see that we are not alone.  It brings joy and happiness to our world and to our life.  It stirs the seedlings to reach for the sky. The placement of the Sun in your chart describes the focus of your ambitions and what it is you feel driven to achieve.  The house it is in shows the interests that will be with you throughout your life.  If it lies in one of the houses below the horizon, the focus will be quieter and more internal than it would be if it were above the horizon, where making a name for yourself can be seen by everyone around you. The traits of the sign the Sun is in at your birth describe how you go about attaining this name for yourself and how much energy your physical body has available to put into it.  You don’t give a thought to these behaviors, you just do them.  They are what you feel comfortable with, the essence of what it means to be you.

The Sun spends approximately one month in each sign

From our vantage point here on Earth, it appears as though the Sun is moving around us, but in the 1600’s,  Galileo and his telescope proved it to be the other way around.  We now know that the Earth revolves around the Sun.  In fact, we now know that the Sun is actually orbiting around the center of the galaxy!
The Earth is 93 million miles away from the Sun and travels around it in a little over 365 days, which is the length of our earth-year.  The orbit is slightly elliptical, not quite a perfect circle.  It’s path around the Sun defines a plane known as the ecliptic, which is an imaginary line in the sky along which the Sun appears to travel as the Earth goes around the Sun.  It is this path that defines the signs of the zodiac. And because of the tilt of the Earth on its rotational axis, which does not change directions as the Earth progresses around the Sun, we experience the seasons associated with different times of the year.

Keywords: life, conscious, identity, success, positivity, fame, victory

Mythology: Apollo Tarot: The Sun Palmistry: The Sun Finger, Line of Apollo, Mount of Apollo Symbolism: laurel wreath, lyre The zodiac sign the sun lands in at the time of your birth determines your ‘sun sign’ (whether you’re an Aquarius, Gemini etc). In this context, the sun represents life, conscious, identity, individuality and what you’re know for. Along with the above interpretations, the sun also symbolises success, recognition and happiness. The sun is a positive omen and one which pops up time and time again in most forms of divination. In Tarot, The Sun card predicts everything positive from projects which end well to longed for children being born. In Lenormand divination, the Sun card carries pretty much the same meaning: it is one of success, good health and positivity. In Palmistry, the ring finger is known as The Sun Finger and corresponds with the same meanings as the sun in astrology. The fleshy part of the palm below the ring finger is called the Mount of Apollo. The Mount of Apollo can reflect how successful you will be; a star on this part of the palm predicts fame. Some people have a line going down the palm from The Sun Finger; this line is known as The Line of Apollo. The longer and more distinctive your Line of Apollo is, the more success you will see in your lifetime. From the myths of Apollo (the sun god) we have the symbols of the laurel wreath and the lyre. In dreams, crystal ball and tea leaf readings the laurel wreath and the lyre are positive symbols which hold the same meaning as the sun. They even pop up in Tarot; on the Rider Waite Smith Tarot card the 6 of Wands, a card which predicts victory, you’ll notice there is a laurel wreath.

The Sun

In Western Astrology, The Sun and Sun Signs represents our Ego. It is who we are, and it is the core ingredient that goes into making up our personalityand influences the flavour of all of the other planets in our charts. It is the essential foundations of a person. It is the self. The Sun represents your “awake” side, your consciousness and outer-directed individuality, unlike the moon and moon sign which is the subconscious feelings and inner-directed individuality. Thus, the Sun is the most important single indicator, fueling the entire personality. The Sun is the real colours that you show the world on a daily basis. It provides their real core, the inner self, of that which is of central concern. The nature of The Sun gives us insight into the general vitality and the ability to assert oneself.

Sun Sign Meaning

The Sun, at the time of birth, determines and provides a better understanding of our ego. It is also our “adult”– the part of us that censors our “inner child”, that reason things out and makes final decisions. The Sun is our basic identity and represents self-realisation.  The Sun also represents our overall vitality. The Sun directs us and is seen as the “the boss” of our chart. When people talk about your star sign, they are referring to your Sun. The Sun is so important in the chart, that the happiest peopleon this earth are those who identify (without over-identifying) with the Sun’s expression. Though one might think that the traits of their Sun would come easy to them, the truth is, the Sun shows what we are learning to be. It is essential to remember that the Sun represents reason as opposed to instinct.

Planet Symbol / Glyph: The Sun

The glyph of the sun is represented by a circle with a dot in the middle. This can be referred to as the ego and our body, our body and our soul, or maybe its just our centred selves and everything revolves around it. It shows the circle of Spirit, indicating potentiality, brought to focus in the central point or dot.

The Sun

When someone asks you what your sign is, whether or not they know it, they’re asking about the position of the sun at your moment of birth. The sun symbolizes our fundamental essence. This vibrant celestial body represents our ego, sense of self, basic personality, and general preferences. (You can read more about what your sun sign says about you right here.) The sun governs the zodiac sign Leo, the vivacious, dynamic fire sign that exudes both bravery and theatricality. It takes approximately one month to transit — or move across — a zodiac sign.
